Overview
The Devil is card XV of the Major Arcana — the number of materialism, obsession, and the shadow aspects of the self that we must face to be free. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, the figure of Baphomet — the Goat of Mendes — stands on an altar, with bat wings, an inverted pentagram on its forehead, and a reversed torch in one hand. Before the altar stand two chained figures — a man and a woman with horns and tails, representing Adam and Eve after the Fall. The chains around their necks are loose; they could slip them off if they chose. They are bound not by the Devil but by their own willingness to remain bound.
The Devil represents the material world, the ego, and the attachments that keep us from our highest good. It is the card of addiction — not just to substances but to patterns of behavior, to relationships, to comfort, to power, to anything that we believe we cannot live without. The Devil appears when we have given our power away, when we have become enslaved by our own desires, or when we are trapped in a cycle of unhealthy attachment. But the card's deepest message is one of hope: the chains are loose. The figures in the card can walk away whenever they choose. Rachel Pollack describes The Devil as the shadow — the parts of ourselves we deny or suppress — and the path to liberation comes through facing our darkness.
Upright Meaning
When The Devil appears upright, it represents bondage — not punishment from an external source but the self-imposed limitations created by your own attachments, fears, and unhealthy patterns. You may be trapped in a toxic relationship, an addiction, a job that drains you, or a belief system that limits you. The Devil says: you are trading your freedom for something that feels safe or pleasurable in the short term. The card asks you to examine what you are attached to and whether that attachment is serving your growth or holding you captive.
The Devil is also a card of shadow work — the confrontation with the parts of yourself that you have denied, repressed, or judged as unacceptable. These shadow aspects are not evil; they are simply parts of you that need to be acknowledged and integrated. By facing them with honesty and compassion, you can reclaim the power you have given away. The Devil is one of the most misunderstood cards in the deck. It is not a card of damnation but of invitation — an invitation to recognize where you are not free and to choose liberation. Paul Fenton-Smith describes The Devil as representing the material world and our attachment to it; the chained figures show how we bind ourselves through fear, habit, and false beliefs.
Reversed Meaning
Reversed, The Devil is a card of liberation. The chains are being released. You are breaking free from an unhealthy attachment, a toxic pattern, an addiction, or a relationship that has been holding you captive. The reversal signals awareness: you have recognized the bondage, and you are ready to release it. The process of liberation may be difficult — breaking old patterns always is — but the energy is moving in the right direction. The reversed Devil can also indicate a release of material attachment — a shift in priorities away from money, status, or possessions toward what truly matters. It is a card of awakening, of reclaiming your power, of walking away from the altar of false gods.
Love & Relationships
In love, The Devil indicates a relationship based on dependency, obsession, or unhealthy attachment. This may be a relationship that is passionate but toxic, where the intensity of the bond comes from fear rather than love — fear of being alone, fear of losing the partner, fear of facing life without the other person. The Devil asks you to be honest about the dynamics in the relationship: are you together because you choose to be, or because you feel you cannot be without each other? For singles, this card warns against falling into patterns of attracting unavailable or unhealthy partners. Do the inner work to break the cycle.
Career & Finances
In career, The Devil can indicate being trapped by money or status. You may be in a job that pays well but drains your soul, or you may be so focused on financial success that you have sacrificed your values. The card asks: what are you selling for the price you are being paid? Is it worth it? Financially, The Devil warns against get-rich-quick schemes, gambling, and any financial strategy that prioritizes short-term gain over long-term integrity. The card also encourages you to examine your relationship with money — are you serving it, or is it serving you?
Health
In health, The Devil often indicates health issues related to addiction, excess, or the suppression of emotions. Addictions of all kinds — to substances, food, work, sex, or any compulsive behavior — are ruled by this card. The pathway to healing is through acknowledgment: the first step is admitting that the chain exists. The Devil also encourages you to look at the psychological roots of physical symptoms. Unexpressed emotions, repressed trauma, and unresolved shadow material often manifest as physical illness. Healing requires facing what you have been avoiding.
