Major Arcana · Number XVII
Major Arcana · Number XVII
The Star is card XVII of the Major Arcana — the number of hope, healing, and divine inspiration. After the shattering revelation of The Tower, The Star comes as the calm after the storm. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, a naked woman kneels beside a pool of water, one foot on land and one in the water, pouring Water of Life from two ewers. One stream pours onto the land, nourishing the earth; the other pours back into the pool, returning to the source. Above her shines a great radiant star of eight rays, surrounded by seven smaller stars. The scene is quiet, serene, and bathed in light. It is the moment of peace after the crisis, the first breath of air after being underwater.
The Star represents the period of healing and renewal that follows any major transformation. The Tower destroys; The Star rebuilds — not with the old, brittle materials but with hope, inspiration, and connection to the divine. The nakedness of the figure represents vulnerability as strength; she has nothing to hide and nothing to protect. She gives freely from one ewer (to the world) and receives freely from the other (from the source). The Star rules Aquarius, the sign of higher consciousness and humanitarian vision, connecting this card to universal love and inspired creativity. Rachel Pollack describes The Star as the card of hope — the calm after the Tower's destruction, the trust in the universe, the finding of meaning.
When The Star appears upright, it is a message of hope, healing, and renewal. After a period of difficulty, the universe is sending you a sign that the worst is over. Light is returning. The Star encourages you to trust in the future, to have faith in the divine plan, and to open yourself to inspiration. This is a time for healing — emotional, physical, spiritual. Allow yourself to be vulnerable, to receive the healing that is available, and to pour your gifts back into the world.
The Star also represents inspiration and purpose. You may experience a creative breakthrough, a spiritual awakening, or a profound sense of clarity about your path. The card says: you are connected to something greater than yourself. Trust that connection. The star above the figure's head represents divine guidance — you are not alone, and you are being guided toward your highest good. Paul Fenton-Smith describes The Star as a card of hope, inspiration, healing, and a sense of purpose — a time to feel connected to the universe and trust that you are on the right path.
Reversed, The Star indicates a loss of hope, faith, or inspiration. You may feel disconnected from your purpose, unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel, or doubtful that things will get better. The reversed Star can appear after a Tower event when the healing has not yet begun, or when you are resisting the process of renewal. It can also indicate a lack of belief in yourself or in the universe — cynicism replacing faith. The remedy is to reconnect with sources of inspiration: spend time in nature, meditate, create something, or seek out beauty. The star is still there; you have simply stopped looking up.
In love, The Star is a beautiful card of healing and hope. If you have been through a difficult relationship experience — a breakup, a betrayal, a period of loneliness — The Star says you are healing. The pain is passing, and hope is returning. For singles, The Star suggests that you are ready to open your heart again. Approach new relationships with the vulnerability and trust that The Star represents — not fear from past wounds, but open-hearted hope. For couples, The Star indicates a period of healing and renewal in the relationship. Old wounds are being forgiven, and the bond is deepening into something more authentic and trusting.
In career, The Star is a card of inspired work and renewed purpose. After a professional setback or period of uncertainty, you are finding your direction again. The Star encourages you to pursue work that is meaningful, that connects you to your purpose, and that allows you to express your unique gifts. Careers in healing, the arts, spirituality, and humanitarian work are aligned with this card. Financially, The Star is a card of quiet optimism. Your financial situation is stabilizing after a period of difficulty. The key is faith: trust that the universe is supporting your abundance and that your financial future is bright, even if the current evidence is not yet clear.
In health, The Star is one of the most positive cards you can draw. It indicates healing, recovery, and a return to well-being. Whether you have been dealing with illness, injury, or exhaustion, The Star says that your body is healing and that you are moving toward a state of balance and vitality. The card encourages you to continue whatever healing practices are working and to trust the process. The Star also recommends incorporating water into your healing routine — baths, swimming, hydration — as the card is strongly connected to the element of water and the flow of life.
